What types of conditions can the retina suffer?
- Breaks or holes. They should be treated immediately with laser or cold application, getting a weld or tear block and thus avoid the progression of the process that complicates the prognosis.
- If the occlusion of the broken or tear is not achieved, the retinal detachment will be triggered, and if this occurs it must be passed to the surgical treatment, without too much delay, urgency that will be given if the detachment commits or not to the so-called central retina.
What symptoms occur when retinal detachment occurs?
The most frequent symptom in which it involves holes (regmatogenous type), is the vision of luminous flashes, sometimes repetitive and perceived on the same sector of the visual field. This may indicate the principle of retinal rupture. However, light flashes do not always appear as a symptom. The visualization of shadows with “curtain” effect that prevents partial or even total vision of an eye, is also a symptom of a possible detachment.
In the presence of any of these symptoms, it is recommended to go urgently to an ophthalmologist to examine the retina under pupil dilation and by ultrasound, if necessary, which will facilitate the diagnosis.
It is very important to perform early surgery in case of detachment. If surgery is delayed, the possibility of restoring vision prior to detachment will be less. The ideal is to perform it almost urgently.
What is the most appropriate treatment?
The treatment of retinal detachment will always be surgical, and requires the repositioning and adaptation of the retina. This can be done externally (with ideation) or internally (with vitrectomy). Sometimes a combination of both techniques occurs. With this, the retina adheres producing a thermal injury with a laser or generating a scar stimulus by freezing (cryotherapy).
In some cases, preventive laser treatment of uncomplicated retinal tears with detachment is advised. The speed and degree of visual recovery will depend on each particular case.
In general, the prognosis of a retinal detachment depends fundamentally on its extension, whether or not it affects the point of maximum vision (the macula) and also the time of evolution. The speed of intervention before an obvious symptomatology is key to avoid irreparable damage.
Prevention of retinal detachment
From Nivaria Clinic We recommend an annual ophthalmologic examination with pupil dilation to check the retinal periphery. Lasers will be applied to degenerative lesions that can cause detachment. In any case, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential for
Good evolution of the process.
