Treatment of Dry Eye Syndrome with IPL Device
Dry eye syndrome occurs more frequently in old age, but according to estimates it affects, depending on the area, approximately 20% of the population. The Dry Eye has its origin in the vast majority of cases in a deficiency of the Meibomian glands, responsible for secreting the lipid layer of the eye (flat sheets that form a continuous barrier around the cells and their structures). As the lipid layer decreases, the aqueous layer of the eye and the cornea remain unprotected. This exposure can lead to different pathologies and that is why its detection and timely treatment is very important.
What symptoms do patients who suffer from Dry Eye Syndrome have?
Patients suffering from Dry Eye Syndrome as a result of a deficiency in the Meibomian glands may suffer from: eye pain / burning; contact difficulty and intolerance; gritty sensation in the eyes; photophobia: feeling of discomfort with intense light; blepharospasm: intense blinking that can be frequent without bringing any relief; difficulties reading on the screen, driving at night or watching TV; increased frequency of corneal ulceration with danger of even serious infections; among others.
What is the treatment with the IPL Device for Dry Eye?
The treatment with the IPL device is applied in the periocular area to improve the evaporative dry eye. It is shown that the protocol with this procedure has an effectiveness of up to 80% in patients suffering from this pathology. The IPL stimulates the Meibomian glands generating pulsed polychromatic light with the intensity necessary for each patient according to their characteristics and skin typology.
